Tips for Decorating Your Bedroom

November 16, 2022

You spend a lot of time in your bedroom. Therefore it needs to be a place where you can relax and forget the worries of the day. To create a relaxing environment, you need to get the decoration, lighting and furniture right. Here are some tips for decorating your bedroom to create a relaxing and calming space.

Colour choice

The colours you choose will help to set the mood for your bedroom. Big, bold colours can be overpowering and create an atmosphere that’s not relaxing and soothing. Muted colours such as pastels, and calming colours of yellows, blues and greens can help create a more zen-like atmosphere. If you do want to add a bold colour to your bedroom, you can do it by painting an accent wall or selecting bold wallpaper for one wall of your room. Your duvet cover and other bedroom accessories can also bring various colours to your bedroom.

Lighting

The right lighting creates an atmosphere and helps you unwind and get ready for a restful night's sleep. Avoid a single harsh overhead light that illuminates your whole bedroom. Instead, opt for small pockets of low-level light placed around your bedroom. Bedslide lamps are a great way to add subtle usable light without startling you awake and ruining the atmosphere. You can also use candles in your bedroom to create an atmosphere through light. Always use candles carefully and never fall asleep when one is lit, this could cause a fire.

Storage

A tidy room with nothing cluttering the floor or the sides is much more relaxing than a room that’s full of clothing and clutter. Make use of storage to remove as much clutter as possible from view in your room. Your storage should be in keeping with the bedroom colours and completely enclosed where possible. Open rails for hanging clothes are a cheap way to organise your things, but they can ruin the ambience of your bedroom.

Furniture

Choose furniture that works with the size of your room, your decoration and your sense of style. A large wooden bed and oak furniture look great in a bedroom with lots of space, high ceilings and a grand appearance. In a much smaller room, oak furniture would look out of place and cluttered. Smaller spaces should opt for minimalist furniture in light colours that don’t take up too much floor space.

Scent

Adding a scent to your room is a great way to create an atmosphere and a relaxing environment. Choose a scent that helps you feel calm, relaxed and comfortable. You can use a plug-in diffuser, essential oils, candles or a wax burner to diffuse your chosen scent around your bedroom. The right scent can completely change the atmosphere of any space.

Soft comforts

If you want your bedroom to feel more comfortable and homely, it should be filled with a variety of soft and comfortable materials. The bed is the prime example; adding more cushions, and a soft blanket on top of the bed can create a more cosy atmosphere. A cosy chair or beanbag can help fill a corner of the room and creates a comfortable area to relax without needing to get into bed. You can also add soft fabric wall art to any plain walls in your bedroom to help the space feel more relaxed.

Stick to your style

One of the most important things to remember when decorating your bedroom is to stick to your personal style. You need to feel comfortable, at home and relaxed in your space. This will only happen if the style matches your personality and likes. Always choose items that you love where possible, even if this goes against all of the other tips.

Warmth and heat

If you have space, you could add a fireplace or a heater to your room. A real fireplace is a great addition if you have the space and the chimney; many older houses already have chimneys that are filled in when they are no longer needed. If your space has an old fireplace, why not open it up and get it working again? Having a place to be cosy and warm on cold winter nights will make your bedroom even more comfortable and relaxing.
